Dex is a tea monk with a wandering route that makes everyone he sees happy to see him. As he pulls in with a sympathetic shoulder, a place to sit, and the right cup of tea for the moment people can unburden themselves. But Dex is starting to get dissatisfied with this life and he decided to turn off his usual circuit and go to an abandoned monastery. But as soon as they make camp on this new path they are stopped by a wild robot.  Robots hadn’t been seen by humans in hundreds of years and Mosscap has been tapped by the other robots to find humans and see what they might need after so long with no contact between the two races.  Long ago when robots obtained sentience, they were freed and in mass they left to live and explore in the wild.  The rest of the book is an enlightening conversation about robots and what does Dex want.
