The day Celia came into her magical powers she cursed her oldest brother to live without love. Her father now ignores her and her middle brother causing the tow siblings to forge a relationship that was previously prevented to happen due to middle brother’s mother being of low status.  When the king decides that Celia must go to court to marry the prince she finds out that not is all as it seems with the reasons of the marriage and now she is nothing more that someone to be ignored by her new husband as she finds out the true meaning behind the war that has gone on between her people and the elves.  A good novella that reminds the reader of the power of words.

This is a great multicast audio of a book I haven’t reread in years and there were little plot points I had forgotten about. The voice casting was great and it is a different but good take on the single narrative reader audio book.  A entertaining start to a long and fun series.

Riela lives on the fringes of her village and is barely tolerated by her neighbors due to not being from there and having magic even if she did save the village from a flood that caused them to manifest and save everyone.  Armed with weapons she hasn’t trained with she goes into the forest to kill the monster that attacked another villager.  After barely surviving an attack and being rescued by a mage named Garrick. Turns out that Riela has magic she can’t use and Garrick thinks she is the latest trick from his enemy Feylan to kill him once and for all.

Slowly Garrick starts showing Riela how to use her magic as he finds out why it seems she is blocked from most of it.  Feylan also wants to know about this new mage and take her for her magic. As the story unfolds Garrick and Riela develop feelings for one another even if they aren’t sure about one another.  As the story unfolds Riela finds out more about her mother who died during her birth.  This adds complications to Riela and Garrick’s relationship and throws a wrench into Garrick’s plans to get even with Feylan.

What a great ending to this series.   The book starts with Elena being a thousand years old and thinking about all the changes to her life and to everyone around her. Everyone that has shown up during the series gets mentioned. Some angels go to Sleep and a one awakens.  The book is still too far out from publication to really get into the details that might spoil any surprises for fans and I won’t be the one to do it.  But every chapter was great to read and loose ends were tied off nicely.  There is always room for short stories set in this universe but if there wasn’t any more the fans really get all their questions answered.

Murderbot is on a mission to save some people and then it gets complicated.  Murderbot is running some new code that Art helped write to monitor their organic parts for emotional regulation. And when they find who they are looking to rescue a new complication arises and they have to rescue more people. Lots of internal dialogue as usual and seeing Three’s personality develop was great as well.

The story goes over the year after the battle of Chicago.  Harry is in a funk from all the death and losses of both friends and allies.  This is a story about grief and depression and how Harry works through it. Of course, there is stuff he is trying to fix from the aftermath of the war and also do his duties as the Winter Knight.  This is definitely the beginning of a new story arc in the Dresden series and can be a good place for a few reader to start if they don’t mind spoilers for past events. I liked how Harry just didn’t bounce back and neither did Chicago and yet by the end of the book there is hope.

Amara has been avoiding her family because she isn’t interested in taking up the family business of being Death.  Granted she always knows when someone is going to die and it has made it difficult for her to have friends and know when and how they will die. When she gets a call saying that her father is ill she goes home thinking that it is a ruse but her dad is really sick and she needs to take up the slack of the region he is responsible for.

Amara’s friend Gray comes home with her since he knows all her secrets and helps with the situation. The story is good and the ending complete you know there is more room in this setting for more books but the reader isn’t left hanging.

When a respected business man is found murdered in his home office laying in front of an opened vault with priceless stolen treasures inside Eve has to solve this and hope that nothing inside comes back onto Roarke’s misspent youth.  A good mystery with the usual Eve and Roarke romance and nothing bad happening with any of their friends make this a great read to curl up with.

Thea finds out she has inherited some property in a small mountain town from her grandmother that she has never met.  Her mom had made her and her sisters swear they would never go back to their mother’s hometown and never speak to their grandmother.  Well after being fired from her job and needing money she goes to find just what she has inherited. With only a suitcase and a pet cockatoo that used to belong to her former boss that the bird hated she is off to Georgia to see just what her inheritance is.  This is a cute story with a lot of hidden family history that comes to light and trying to find a new start in a new town.  Rhea’s sisters are really only on the phone and don’t come into town until near the end of the book. There is a cute romance that has forbidden vibes since Rhea’s grandmother and his grandmother didn’t like one another but for good reasons.

This is a retelling of the tale of the seven boys turned into geese and saved by their sister who has to make them shirts while never speaking until the task is complete.  The setting is the usual Regency England with the Elemental Masters but it is set in the countryside and only at the end do we even see the White Lodge get involved.  The father is a minor lord who managed to get a swanmaid to marry him and then he hid her cloak of feathers so she couldn’t leave. When she gets it back she leaves and never returns abandoning her 8 children.  The four sets of twins, 7 brothers and one sister are mostly ignored by their father and are surprised when years later he shows up with a new bride. The story follows the tale’s framework and the usual ending happens. This story does show what happens with courtesans and how some made a living. Granted they didn’t use dark magic like the one in the story did. But the story also shows how small acts of kindness can pay back to the person when they need it the most.

The current government wants to use him to pilot a probe to find new worlds to colonize and they barely tolerate him since his existence is blasphemy to their religious beliefs. But other countries have the same tech and it is a race to get Bob to space before he is blown up on the ground. Now Bob and several clone selves are out in the universe trying to find new places and maybe get back to Earth.

This is set a few years after Legends and Lattes. Fern the bookstore rattkin friend of Viv’s from her early days as a merc has sold her store and moved next door to Viv to open a bookstore next to the coffee shop.  But soon after she opens the store with doubts in her head and a belly full of alcohol she wakes up the next day in a wagon far from town. Fern is in the company of a legendary Elf warrior and her bounty moving far away from where Fern should be.  So the only way back seems to be the way forward and Fern has adventures and constantly writes letters back to Viv.

For extra enjoyment of this story find and read Goblins & Greatcoats, a short story set in the same universe. You don’t have to but you will enjoy it as well since that character is found in the pages of this book.

This is a SF mystery with time travel. A super rich man has been murdered along with a clone of him murdered at a second site.  A retired cop is brought back to help with the case since she has a history with the victim.  There is a veteran cop familiar with her and a newbie cop and the three of them go to the murder site to work on the case.  I don’t want to get details since it will give too much of the plot away.

Periwinkle the cat narrates his life in the pages of this book. Starting with coming to live with Nnedi and her daughter Anyaugo, Periwinkle takes a few months to warm up to them but now loves them very much. When they are asleep, he jumps in his space ship and races an orange space cat that has extra limbs and is from Neptune just like Periwinkle’s father.  He protects the family from a hot sauce demon and also goes to Nigeria when Nnedi goes there for a year to write a book.  When he is there he still has his spaceship since he keeps it in liminal space. He gets out one day and has even more adventures.  The story and the art work hand in hand the entire book and I love the illustrations.  A fun read for all ages.

The third book has Alex going to America with their valet but not their horse in order to help Dr Denton. Denton’s cousin has gone missing at an abandoned coal mine in West Viginia.  Of course, things are not simple and Alex learns more about mines then they ever wanted to know. Almost as eerie as the first book and leaving you with the feeling that we all need a friend like Alex in our lives even if we hope to never truly need someone of Alex’s mettle to help with those kinds of things

Chih and their hoopoe companion Almost Brilliant are traveling to the city of Baolin to collect stories about the famine for their monastery. After eating a bowl of a pork dish the city is famous for, Chih is called to visit the local magistrate and is put under guard while there.  Chih still does their work collecting stories from people in the home even as they can see there is a secret hiding in the house that is llinked to the famine.  The 18 year old mystery is solved by the end and the story gives insight to just what people will do when there is nothing to eat and they are being hunted by a famine demon.  As with most of these stories they can be read in almost any order and no real need of backstory to enjoy it.

This is a new story universe but does have some similar themes as The Others.  Humans coexist with The Arcana.  Beth is a new detective in the town of Penwych and due to a coin toss she didn’t understand she is taking her first case to get more details about a gun used in a weird domestic violence shooting.  Beth discovers that bargains made on the Isle of Wyrd can be more than they seem if you are not precise enough in your ask.  Not all the Arcana look human or act like humans. Beth ends up working several cases that have parts of them going to or coming from the Isle. Most visitors to the Isle come for sightseeing and fortunetelling but there are other powers on the island and never go thought an arch unless you have no choice.

Sera Swan was a magical prodigy and the star protégé of the leader of the England’s magical guild even if her background wasn’t from the old families.  But on a visit home her great aunt dies and with the help of a cursed witch staying at the inn she is able to resurrect her Aunt Jasmine.  But to cast the spell cost her almost all of her power and because she worked magic she shouldn’t have she was exiled from the guild.  The inn has been infused with some magic and has become a refuge for people that need it even if they have no magic of their own.  Fifteen years later her young cousin from her Icelandic side of the family has magic and has come to live with her.  Now she has a chance to fix what happened to her but will it all work out is the question.

I really liked this book, with having family by choice and realizing that not all family members are good for you.

This follows up the previous book but Davi breaks the fourth wall and gives a great recap of the previous book.  Davi heads back to the human lands with only Tsav to back her up to see what they can do to make the coming invasion go easier.  Of course things don’t turn out as she expects since she hasn’t been in the kingdom as she normally would have been in her past lives and now she has to keep coming up with plans on the fly to make everything go her way.   Davi finding out who did this to her and why was interesting. The entire setup for the book is great and it wraps everything up nicely.  An entertaining duology.
