The story can work two ways either as a placeholder waiting for book three to come out of an introduction to the series. Only one "surprise" from the two previous books is stated in here and the story still works even if you haven't read everything. It helps that only one other character from the series in in the novella. There is no real infodumping on the reader which is rather nice. The plot is ok but is easily figured out as you read it. I think this was more because of the constraints of the size of the story.
