The latest book to star Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr is the start of a new series. Granted the main players in the book have been in previous books and there is a backstory that you do get dripped in the story but a reader can start this one and have a good time reading it.  Torin is retired but now works for the Justice Department doing the things she wants to do that she can no longer do in the military. Along with several of her former marine friends and her lover they are currently in pursuit of grave robbers that just might start another war if they find the weapons that are supposed to be left alone on the grave planet of one of the elder races.

I love these books and can’t wait for more of them to show up.

I only recently started reading this series. I got this review copy for the second book and decided to read the first book so I wouldn’t get lost.  The nice thing is I think you don’t have to read the first book to understand what is happening to both Blackthorn and Grim.  I did cry when you finally find out what happened to Grim that made him the way he is.  Blackthorn is still driven by revenge and in this story a friend from her past finds her and offers her an opportunity for revenge that she can’t pass up. Along the way and to throw Grim off the scent that she is going to break her seven year vow she takes up the challenge of freeing Lady Geiléis from a curse that plagues her land.  Of course not everything is as it appears with the curse and information about it appears to be lost in the mists of time.

The twentieth Harry Bosch novel has him dealing with no longer being a police officer. Still in the early stages of his forced retirement due to his actions in the previous book Harry’s brother approaches him about a case he is working on. Harry has no desire to cross the line and work against the police but something about the case nags at him and he begins to help Mickey with the defense of an innocent man on trial for murder. Of course Harry just doesn’t try and clear him he also finds the actual killers. His actions start a trail of dominos falling that will connect several murders and makes waves through LA.

A good solid read but now I’m wondering where Harry will go next in his retirement. I can’t see him working for his brother but I also don’t see him just sitting around either.
