#16 Control Point by Myke Cole
Feb. 10th, 2013 10:05 amI kept reading this book not liking the world or most of the characters. The use of magic is against the law unless under orders of the government. There is no way to tell if someone is going to come into magic until they do. So if you get magic you can't use it and you must report the the government. Of course if you have a type that is prohibited then all bets seem to be off. There are no second chances or that is one the general public is led to believe. Turns out if you have magic that you use you are "disappeared" into the military and trained. Of course if you did use it then you are a criminal and for all intensive purposes a tool to be used and discarded if you don't work. The book's story covers an officer that manifests, panics, kills his abusive father accidentally while trying to gather supplies at his childhood home and then is recaptured and trained to work for the military as a contractor since due to his crimes can't be part of the military any more. Oscar is constantly thinking about escape due to his treatment. At every turn he is reminded that he doesn't count and is a tool to be used. Of course by the end of the book he rebels. I was just surprised that it took that long for it to happen. I might pick up the next book to see where it goes from here since Oscar pulls the curtain to show everyone what has been happening.
