I admit I judged this book by the zombies and I held off reading it even though I like the writers other books very much.  [Mira Grant is a pen name for Seanan McGuire] I was wrong to hold off reading them. The only plus to hold off is I don't have to wait on book two. Yes there are zombies but this really is more of a thriller type of book and I like the world building of trying to live in a world that has zombies and still trying to live a normal life and how that wrecks havoc on every day life. I've recommended the book to several other people and I can now see why it was on the ballot for the Hugo.  Now to try and now read the second book ASAP and then sit and whine for book 3.

The start of a new series that is set about 20 plus years after the last Riley Jenson stories but the reader doesn't need to have read any of them since Riley and her brother are only on the edges of the story. Risa is a half werewolf with some psychic powers that allows her to see the recently deceased. Her mother asks her to check on a child of one her clients that is in a coma. When Risa does that she sees that something has stolen her soul. Risa gets pulled into a battle that involves her father that she has never met. The book is a good set up to the new series and the plus is book 2 is all ready out. It was the great beach read and went great with the sand and fruity drinks.
