#55 Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

This is the first of two books I read that are set in an alternate Atlanta. In this one magic works part of the time and when it does, technology doesn't. Our heroine is a mercenary who once apprenticed to this world's version of magical police. She didn't stay even though she was a star pupil due to now wanting to follow the rules. Plot starts with her avenging her godfather and former teacher from this group. The story shows you this universe's version of weres and vampires. You find out more about Kate as the story progresses and why she chose her path. I liked the story even if it was a little thin. I swear Ace loves to sell less than 300 page novels. I'll be looking for the next one in the series.
