This is the first book in a trilogy. I've heard about the books for a while and the fans seem to be very hardcore about it. I have seen women in costume contests dressed as the main character. Phedre carries the mark of Kushiel's Dart which means she experiences pain as pleasure. Because of the several people have said rather negative things about the books since she has her virginity sold at 14. I didn't find a problem with it since this seems to be the cultures norm and not an aberration. The setting is an alternate France. The religion and politics are very well thought out and I have to admit that I will be looking forward to the next book.

I hear the same about The Phoenix Guard by Stephen Brust. I love them that they are a homage to Dumas. But some people really couldn't take them because of how they were written. I need to reread it and Five Hundred Years Later so I can finally read the new trilogy.

I admit I had been leery of the Kushiel books becasue of the negatives things people had said about them. I finally put that aside and finally tried one. And I can see where people have problems with them but I did enjoy it but see if you are not in the mind for fantasy with only light magic and high politics it wouldn't be the cup of tea you wanted at that time.
