This is the third book in the series and it does have a bit of a tie in to the first book. You find out about the dagger that is the tool of the reigning sorcerer of Felport. Marla tangles with death over the dagger and her solution to the problem is rather clever.  I like that Marla truly loves the city she watches over and she knows that she has faults and flaws and does try to work around them. It is a bit of fun for an urban fantasy that still has most of that world not know about the various magic users around them.
