This is a nonfiction book that covers some of the poisons that Agatha Christie used over the years in her books. The chapters cover a poison and talk about the book that it was in without giving away the murder and tell you if there was a real life case that might have inspired her to use it. The neat part is the author goes into excellent detail in the science on each poison on how it kills, if there was an antidote to it, and did Agatha Christie give all the correct symptoms and dosages in her books.  I didn’t know that Agatha Christie worked in a pharmacy during both World Wars and this is where she got the knowledge to use these poisons so well in her books.  I enjoyed the book and it will be a fun read for a big mystery fan.

I am glad that I gave this a whirl. The tone of this autobiography comes across as lighthearted and very breezy but by the end some very important things are addressed.  Felicia had a bit of an unusual childhood with being home schooled and having interests in the performing arts even when she was young.  After entering college at 16 on a music scholarship and graduating double major in math and music she decided to move to LA to become an actor.

The parts I found interesting is she is very open about her personal life as she was trying to start something new [The Guild].  That it took off really surprised her but it did and she is now more than just an actress with a large following but a producer as well.  If you have any interest at all in Felicia Day as an actor or just a social media presence this is a great book to read.

I picked this up because I admit to being a fangirl about certain things.  This covers just about everything about fandom you can think of the top of your head. Lots of points about where to get started on fan fiction, conventions, cosplay and other stuff.  Most of what it covered I knew and I just had a few minor nitpicks about things but overall it was a nice. There is even a section about how to handle trolls, which is a sad state of the internet that it has to be address.

I picked this thinking it would have some recipes as well as talking about the food culture during the medieval era.  Instead what I got was a very detailed and heavily footnoted book about food and some of the reasons behind what was eaten during that time frame.  The book did leave more to the Italian side since it seems the few cookbooks from that time frame were from that area.  Every part of food is covered in here along with how some dining customs changed as food changed.  An interesting read , but the book is more for someone doing research during that time frame and less for the average foodie.  Lots of reference sources listed if you do decide to fall down that rabbit hole.

Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination by J.K. Rowling, Joel Holland

This is a reprint of the commencement speech that J K Rowling gave at Harvard several years ago. I enjoyed reading the speech and I’m sure this will be given as a graduation gift to lots of people. If you have seen Make Good Art by Neil Gaiman then you will be familiar with the format of this speech as well.

I picked up this review book because it was about an English Pointer and I currently have two pointers. The book introduces Judy, an English Pointer that was a ship dog in the English Navy and became an official Japanese prisoner of war. The book is grim reading for the most part with Judy barely surviving and tale after tale of her giving warnings of attacks both before and after she was captured. The prison camp section of the book is tough reading of the toll on the men in the camps and every page you almost expected to have something else terrible happen to Judy or one of the men that cared for in the camps. She was awarded the Dickin medal before her death at the age of 13.  Overall the book is dry and very factual but that Judy makes it through all of it makes it a good read.

If for some reason you find yourself in possession of a large amount of eggs then this just might give you some ideas with what to do with it. Each chapter deals with a different way to make the eggs, some sections are recipes for only part of the egg and some with white and yolk used separately. The book is also photo heavy to show each step of the prep. Is this the cookbook to keep forever and ever? No I don’t think so but it is a good one to check out for pointers and ideas.

One of the things I love about my local library is checking out cookbooks and seeing what will work for me.  And it has lead me to buy a few cookbooks that I knew would work for me.

I'm a big fan of this movie so when I saw this was availble to review I grabbed it.  It was a fun read of the making of the movie from Cary being cast until the final day of shooting. There is also a bit about when they all got together for the 25th anniversary of the film. If you have love of the movie you will enjoy the book. He talks about stuff that happens on set and how certain shot came into the film even when they were not planned. I had a smile on my face the entire time I was reading this. Just a great happy read and I'm glad I picked it up.

This is the perfect little gift book for the foodie or language lover in your life. The book provides a nice color drawing of the food in question and a short description of the saying in French and gives some background how it might have developed in the language. Instead of the usual coffee table book a cute book to have in the kitchen or the nearby breakfast bar to flip through while waiting for something to finish cooking.

This is really a bare bones biography of Musashi. The setting is his adopted son explaining his Father’s entire life to someone standing at a memorial marker for Musashi. The entire thing reads as super brief summary of some facts. The book left me feeling that they glossed over the entire life of this person and kept repeating dry facts and dates without really touching what made this man who he is and how important The Book of Five Rings is to this day.

I like Carl Hiassen's fiction and this is the second book of his nonfiction that I have read and the writing style is even more biting in his nonfiction. The books chapters are set up on different themes.  I did a lot of grinding my teeth on the environmental section since Florida is my home state and just shaking my head over the political columns. If you are interested in his fiction writing this is a great window to peek inside to see just where his story ideas come from. Overall a good roundup of news stories set in Florida since 2000.

This is for someone who is a fan of the Fables series. I've enjoyed the comic series and some of the spin offs and this was a great index to all the characters that have been brought to life in the pages of the comic. You find out which ones came whole cloth out of the writer's mind and what was based off of a fairy tale. As I was reading this I could see someone using it for writing a paper on fairy tales and needing a good cross reference for some of the lesser known characters. The short asides from the creator and artists that are dropped throughout the book were fun to read and there are some hints about what might show up in future issues.

Even after reading mixed reviews on the book I decided to give it a shot. The book is more autobiographical but the author freely admits to changing things to hide their identity and protect from potential lawsuits. The narrative jumps around and smugness of the book just grated on my nerves. After a while I was actively skimming looking for anything that might be interesting. I'm glad that I got this from the library because I don't think I would have wanted to have wasted my cash on this.

This is more one person's high points as a hostage negotiator and the reader will recognize the big cases that he worked on. The book was ok but not what I was hoping for. You don't get as much out of what makes him such an excellent negotiator as someone that can analyze a situation and see what everyone else is doing wrong. Not sure if that is more looking at each situation in hindsight since it is a memoir of his time in the job or that he knew at the time when everything was going right and wrong.

IF you are interested in the FBI it does give some insight working and the interdepartmental competition  and it does cover the work it does that most people have no idea is the FBI's job.

This tiny gift book I think will be the new graduation gift for anyone that wants something different than "Oh the Places You Will Go". The advice is good and the typesetting is very engaging. A book that you can reread quickly for a bit of a lift in your spirits when you need it while trying to work on something creative and the world is grinding you down about it.

I read this book in bits and pieces over a period of time that worked out well since each chapter covered a different piece of clothing. Nothing was gone into huge detail but there  were numerous footnotes and several other books were mentioned that would cover a certain article of clothing in much greater detail. Bits of fashion advice were sprinkled throughout the book and neat tidbits of history as well. A good gift book for someone fashion forward to see the roots of what they love so much.

It took a long time to read this since I didn't finish it the first time I got it from the library and the list for it is just insane. The book is great for introverts letting you know that you are not bad even if our society is set up to love extroverts. The book is full of anecdotes about the writer and other people that she has had contact with dealing with different things while being introverted. There are several studies quoted as well and overall it is a good book for positive affirmation that is ok to be an introvert.

This is a really lovely looking book that is an excellent guide of pairing beer with cheese. A great book to gift the beer fan in your life that also happens to like good food with good beer. The book breaks down each style of beer and what and why each cheese goes with that style. It isn't a dense book but the photographs are really nice and there is also a index for both the cheese and beer along with a small chart to look up complementing pairings.

I saw this listed on someone's list of read books for the year and it looked very interesting. It is mostly photographs of kimonos owned by Geisha-Diva Ichimaru. There is a short biography of her life and it made me want to track down her music recordings. Not a big book but one of very cool photos.

I saw this listed on someone else's blog and since I had never seen it before I though I would check it out. It is mostly a photographic depiction of her life as an apprentice. The photos are beautiful but for the most part there is not a ton of info on her day to day life. The tone of the book is breezy and not scholarly. Nevertheless I still enjoyed it and wished there was more.
