This is a young adult book that I had heard good things about. For once it is a SF YA book not a fantasy at all. Society is 300 years into the future. Everyone at 16 gets modified to be a pretty as can be. Turns out that not everyone wants to be pretty and there is a small group of people that live apart from society. Of course the society wants these people back into the fold. The story centers on one girl just a few months shy of her time and missing her best friend who has all ready had the surgery. She hooks up with another girl that had some friends run away instead of taking the surgery. Her friend leaves her a cryptic map to follow. She decides not to follow it and become a pretty instead. Of course this doesn't happen, instead Special Circumstances steps in and tells her she needs to follow the map and set off a homing device if she wants to ever be pretty. I liked the book and have gotten the second one to read soonish.
