I had seen so much love for this book I decided to give it a try. I loved Gideon Nav, she hates where she lives and longs to join the cohort off planet. Harrowhawk is heir to the Ninth house and is childhood frenemy to Gideon. Harrow nips Gideons plans in the bud and offers her the deal that she can leave and go to the army after she becomes Harrow’s cavalier for a trip to the First House so Harrow can become a Lyctor for the Emperor. Most of the plot has them searching the remains of the First House to solve the mystery before the other heirs of the other Houses. The first and middle do drag but the constant snipping between Gideon and Harrow is entertaining. The mystery of Gideon’s beginnings is never solved but lots of background on Harrow is revealed near the end of the book. The ending definitely leaves a fan of the book chomping at the bit for the next one. I listened to this on audio and the narrator was great and I think made it all the more enjoyable.
