And we are back to Bob being the main focus of this story for this one. This might also be the one you want to reread the earlier books because some things from them are coming to light in this one. The world now knows about the Laundry or as the press derisively calls them “The Ministry of Magic” because of what happened in the previous book. The book has the Laundry being shut down and privatized and is it greed or something else behind the government’s push for this to happen. I don’t’ want to get into the plot but everything moves quickly in the story and it wraps u up what they are doing but this series really doesn’t give you the happy warm fuzzy endings. This isn’t the book to start reading the series. It is the payoff of reading all the previous books and it isn’t the end of the series but definitely finishing a story arc and starting a new one.

Set a few months after the previous book our heroine is having a bit a crisis. There hasn’t been any demon activity for her to fight and Aveda/Annie have to face the fact that for the last decade she hasn’t been the best friend she should have to Evie her childhood best friend/ assistant/ and now superhero partner. The book has Annie doing things to try and make amends for being a jerk to her friends for a long time and to be a better person. When Evie gets engaged Annie sees this as her ticket to make it be the best wedding for her friend. Things don’t always work out and there are some hurt feelings but in the end the bad guy that pops up during the wedding planning gets taken care of and the wedding turns out to be great.

This novella is set in three parts. First dealing with the aliens and finding out who they are. Marianne is the scientist that has found DNA evidence of a newly discovered mitochondrial DNA sequence that the aliens are very interested in. The second part deals with a few years after the aliens left with a few people with this DNA sequence and in exchange they have given us technology that we can build our own ships and come to them. The Earth is also dealing with worldwide disaster from passing through a giant spoor cloud that the aliens warned us but didn’t have the technology to stop it. The third section deals with the spaceships almost being completed. As much as you would think this is a tech story this is more of a people story and how persons and people as a whole react to all of these changes.

A good solid read and I’ll be interested to see where it goes next.
