The Wicked + The Divine: Year One
by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie , Matthew Wilson, Clayton Cowles

This new collection is the first 11 issues or books one and two if you have read those collections instead.  I had read the first book but that was almost two years ago, so it was good to reread it. The overall arc doesn’t seem to have an end coming to it but one of the mini arcs in the story is completed by the end of the book. This collection also has lots of additional info for fans on how the comic came to be and the way the story was put together.

Here is the link to my review of the first 5 issues. http://missingvolume.livejournal.com/282610.html

Overall, I’m very curious with the way the plot is unfolding and will certainly be reading more of this series.

This story arc seems to start with Harley setting up a fake kidnapping of herself to get her gang thinking for themselves and quickly becomes Harley being kidnapped for real.  The new villain makes some bad choices for herself while she is fighting the gang and those parts irked my story wise but overall it was a fun read and the last bit definitely lets you know that this villain will be back at some later date.

I’m not sure why I hadn’t read this when it first came out but I’m glad that I finally did.  The novella can be read without knowing anything about the world setting. Young Penric on his way to get betrothed stops to help some people and instead become the recipient of a demon from priestess of the Bastard God.  Not trained in the religious arts he is viewed with suspicion as he is taken to the head of the order.  The church has a few demons that are passed upon death to specially selected candidates and Penric certainly isn’t one of them.

This is a great self-contained story that doesn’t require any knowledge of the other works since this is set between the books but since there is two centuries between them there is nothing from the books given away.
