#40 Thief's Magic by Trudi Canavan

The very obvious first book in a new series switches what will be two main characters that use magic. Tyen is a student of magic and finds a magical book during a archaeological dig / treasure hunt. The book was once a person and can communicate with anyone that touches it and also absorb everything they know and add to the books store of knowledge. The school he is from tries to make more advanced machines that work on magic more efficiently since there is less and less magic for it to draw on.

Rielle is from a world that believes if you use magic then you are stealing it from the Angels. Anyone not part of the priesthood that uses magic is banished to the mountains. Her story is more of an artistic girl falls for the poor but talented artist and gets caught up by a "corrupter" working in her city that uses magic not under the auspices of the priesthood.

The book ends with them both on a journey far away from where they started from. The world is interesting and the book is well written but if you are looking for a definite ending and answers to all the questions you are going to be a bit disappointed.
