I have read the short story that this novel was based on but for the life of me I can't recall the details. Tana wakes up after a party to find that almost everyone is dead from a vampire attack. Her former boyfriend has been bitten and is tied to a bed in a room with a chained up vampire. After getting both of them out they head to Coldtown, the one refuge for the bitten and vampires and also an oasis for people hoping to be turned. Of course the vampire Gavriel has plans to meet his maker when he gets there. Things don't work out according to everyone's plans but the story is fast paced and well plotted. A very enjoyable read.
