#59 The Darwin Elevator by Jason M. Hough

The first novel in a rather grim future.  An unknown alien race has sent a ship and given us a space elevator but in return they have also given humanity a zombie infection. Very few people are immune to it the rest must stay in the area of the space elevator or catch the infection within a few hours. Skyler runs a crew that scavenges the infected areas for goods that people request and to keep his crew paid. There is a power struggle between the Orbitals that grow food to the those living on the elevator and in the shanty town below. While a political mess starts to blow up it turns out the builders are sending another ship. Rather grim reading and there are two quick sequels coming out after this one.
