New series by a writer that I have sampled a few of her series but not read everything. Set in an indeterminate future on Earth after a virus that seems to prey on people of only one type of ethnic background. Many countries have merged into mega states and the ones that haven't are technological backwaters and looked down upon by the others. There are still conflicts and there is now a super soldier to take care of them. Mae is one of these and she has been suspended for fighting at a funeral of her former lover. Assigned to bring back a RUNA citizen that has been in exile she ends up helping him try to solve a series of murders that no one wants to admit might have a supernatural nature to them. Justin's job before he was exiled was to check on all religious institutions and for the most part make sure the keep up with the laws that try to micromanage them out of existence. He is touted for having incredible observations skills, super smart but a known womanizer and party animal. When you first meet him he seems to have two voices in his head. Turns out he has had dealings with an unknown god. This is the only part of the story that falls flat for me. If someone is so smart and works busting churches and knows the ends and out of religion wouldn't he have bothered to try and figure out just which god is trying to co opt him to their side. The clues were so obvious that it was a bit of a joke that he doesn't figure it out until the very last chapter of the book the name of the god who has claimed him. The gods are fighting to come back into a world that has banned them and will be using people they find as their tools. Should be interesting to see how this will play out with old gods and new tech.
