The setting of the book mixes two popular settings right now, vampire and steampunk and neither is really used as window dressing to the plot. The plus is the vampires are a different species not just turned humans so there is more to the plot than just humans with different dietary habits. Only real downside to the book is that it is part of a series. I may wait until the third book so I can read two and three back to back.
