Here is another Hugo winner that I haven't read until it came up on the book club rotation. I liked the tech in it but I left that the ending was a bit anticlimactic. The setup of the story is a man's quest getting a space elevator set up and of course there is only one good spot on the world and it is a religious site. Due to some freak weather a almost impossible thing happened which has the monks give up the monastery  they were protecting for centuries. The book ends even before the elevator is in general use. I liked the book but I don't think I would have voted for it.
