#71 After the Fall, Before the Fall, During the Fall by Nancy Kress

This was on the Hugo ballot as a novella. so I read it in order to vote fully informed. The setup of the story was interesting but the ending was a complete downer. I'm not sure how you could have changed the outcome of the story but it was just rough and so bleak.

Is the ending a complete downer? I thought the group in the future has a good shot at survival.

I don't see how they are going to be able to do it with such a small population group with a pack of 12 babies, a half dozen teens that are not all fertile and the few adults with skills being older and dying. And the safe home they had dumps them out in the open with just tents , one puppy and some gerbils for animals.

Well I am glass is half full person. I also figured that it was better being outdoors where you had some freedom than to be trapped in the safe house, particularly since Earth looked like it was recovering from the disaster. This is a story strength since some can see it as a bleak ending where I saw as an optimistic ending.
