I decided to do a bit more in-depth number crunching on the past year of reading.  Feel free to skip if you are not interested in numbers.

I read 115 books, this is down from the last few years and in fact I didn’t hit my goal of 125 books read. Sort of bummed about that but I didn’t fudge my goal number to get the virtual cookie from Goodreads.   About 68% of the books I read were review copies of some type with almost half of them coming from NetGalley.  Breakdown goes 54 books from NetGalley, 22 that I bought to read, 17 from Edelweiss, 14 from the local library and 8 direct from the publisher.  Granted some of the books I got as review copies I might later buy a personal copy of something I first read as a review since almost every review copy I read was in a digital format.

Breakdown by subject has 64 fantasy books, 23 graphic novels, 16 science fiction, 6 fiction books and 6 nonfiction books.  I didn’t bother to do separate numbers for the YA books since I didn’t read that many this year.  For a M/F ratio I had 71 female writers to 33 male writers. I’m not counting books that had both male and female cowriters or if it was anthology.  And at least one I read is listed a woman but I know it is a husband and wife writing together.  I read 21 novellas but a few were repeats for me since they were in a single author collection, but still not bad on the novella front.  I also reviewed a short story this year but only did one since it was separate and I actually had that sent to me to review.

Overall I think I want to start reading more of my TBR pile this year since that is getting a bit out of control. And of course I will try and read more than I did last year. I had several weeks that I didn’t read at all and that caused me to not hit my personal goal. Onwards to 2016 and start writing the reviews that are already backed up again.

This weekend I will be set up at Illogicon in Raleigh, NC with GOH Jaqueline Carey. If you are attending stop by and shop for a while.

Looking at my numbers by my tags it seems that 60% of my reading last year was review copies and 30% were copies I got from my local library. Of course some of these I went and bought personal copies of my own but not all of them. I increased over the last year of review copies read and I think I might try and back down a bit from that just so I can hit more of my TBR pile. I say this and then something interesting gets listed and I try it out.  Once again I read most of the Hugo ballot and will try again in the coming year.  I’m keeping my reading goal at 125 and I should be able to do this since even though I hit 133 for 2014 there were the usual slim kid books in the pile. Helping out to hit the goal was ripping through 13 books in a series [Thanks local library] and reading 30 graphic novels of various series and types. As usual my reading tastes favored fantasy again as much as I like Science Fiction I think I will always lean more to the fantasy side of the reading buffet. Not to say I didn’t read any nonfiction but I only read a few and it will stay that way since I only get things that interest me or are by writers I already know.

I am uploading signed books from WFC today. All ready available for purchase on the website is The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson. This is a new novella and it is signed as well.

Also if you read my blog for the reviews, yes I know the number is out of order. I had to post a review for something I had requested to review. It will force me to review faster I guess. ;-)

I am set up at two conventions this month. The first one is Deepsouthcon 50 in Huntsville, AL this weekend. They have an amazing guest list so if you can stop by it should be worth it. The following weekend Contemporal in Chapel Hill, NC, this is a first year convention with a steampunk theme. Both cons should be a lot of fun. If you want any signed books please order them ASAP so I don't run out.

Next weekend I will be at Illogicon in Raleigh, NC Jan 13-15 and the following weekend I will be at Chattacon in Chattanooga, TN Jan 20-22. I'll be set up in the dealer's room for both shows so stop by and buy some books. If you want me to bring a certain book to the show to avoid shipping charges let me know and I will make sure to pack it for you.

So if you posted something on LJ that I should really see please let me know. Reading stayed steady while I was on vacation but I am 12 books behind posting reviews.  I did use my iPad to read while I was on vacation and I have to say that was a blessing and a curse. Blessing since I could get library books on it the down side was my flight was delayed and I drained the battery almost to zero while traveling. I did pack one paperbook per leg to read when all electronics had to be shut off. This doesn't work so well since I didn't want to put either book aside once I could power stuff back on. So I will be back dating all my reviews so if you are interested in them you will have to check them.

Yes I did just jump 15 book reviews to post something. I had actually requested the book and didn't want to drag my feet posting it since I haven't posted other things. So I will be going back and post dating the missing 15 at some point.

If you posted anything on LJ that you think I might need to know about anytime for the month of Feb please send me an email because damn I'm never getting caught up here. LOL

I've been on vacation but will be back in the saddle in a few days and will have a ton of books to catch up on. Also the store and other online selling venues should be back up and ready to sell by Tuesday as well.

So I read a 100 books, this is way down from the previous year of 120 but still up from 2008 at 75.  I've decided not to count cookbooks I have read in the total so Goodreads totals and this will never quite match. I also read a few short story collections that I didn't bother to list mostly because I read one or two stories in them and sent them back to the library. This year I did get books sent to me to read from Goodreads with one reviewed in 2010 and one to be posted shortly in 2011.  Next month I will be on vacation so I doubt I will be able to post much for most of Feburary but I am hoping to at least have a few written and ready to go as soon as I get back.  Oh who am I kidding, I don't even think I will be bringing the laptop with me since I really don't want to lug it all around since Thomas will have his laptop and ipad.  I have all ready read 6 books so far for this year and once again I am behind but I will try to at least catch up before I leave on vacation.

I've been bad about updating the LJ. Even with the review posted today I am still 3 books behind reviewing and I didn't make any announcement about the con I was at last week.  Check the website in the next day or two for signed books by David Gerrold, John Scalzi and several others.

Well I just finished posting the last of my catchup reviews. If you missed them they are all on December 31st as several entries.

I had a few books that I was in the middle of reading in 2007 but unfinished until 2008 so as usual they will go on 2008.

I read a few short stories in collections that I just couldn't get into the rest of the collections. Prom Dates from Hell which I picked up for the Kim Harrison story and Dead of Night for the JD Robb story, both books just couldn't hold me past the two stories and I skimmed the other stories in the books but just couldn't be bothered to finish any of them. I started reading Many Bloody Returns but I haven't finished that one since I wasn't in the mood for short stories not that the stories were bad. I think I will save the rest of the book for a rainy day.

Looking back at my LJ this is my second highest year with 76 read since I decided to track my reading. Hopefully using tags I will be able to keep better track of the nonfiction vs fiction I am reading. I know I slacked off on reading the nonfiction this year but hopefully I will get back in the grind. Of course the nonfiction I tend to read lately is food related but I don't think that will surprise my friends.

I have read 4 books so far. Even on vacation I prefer paper to electrons. I'll post reviews when I get home but I have a feeling I will not break 70 this year. Oh well, still having fun and staying warm in Germany.
